Hunters from the stars search a dying Earth for a golden girl child who will save the Atlantean Empire, the greatest power in the galaxy, from a monstrous alien that feeds on pain. Rayne and her brother fight to survive in a world gone mad, but a prophecy in an ancient tome is set to change their fate. The Drayconar Empire, rival of the Atlanteans, also searches for her, to slay her and prevent the prophecy from coming true so it can rule in Atlan’s stead.

An ancient black ship is Rayne’s guide, left behind to protect the survivors of one of the elder races, which died out millennia ago. Only five remain frozen in an endless sleep, waiting for the rest of the universe to evolve to their level. Soon the Crystal Ship will appear from another universe and carry the Envoy to Atlan to destroy it, and only Rayne can prevent that from happening, although she has no idea how.

While the Drayconar Empire plots Rayne’s death and the Atlanteans strive to protect her, a mysterious masked man known as the Shrike holds the power to save the Golden Child or let her die. He is a reviled slaver lord, leader of the third largest empire, and no friend of the Atlanteans, yet Rayne trusts him, and his enigma fascinates her.

Only one thing is inevitable; the Earth will die.

Good Sci/Fi start for a series

I liked this first book of the Slave Empire series enough to buy the other two. I want to find out how Rayne saves the universe. I liked that it jumped scenarios - that held my interest enough to keep reading. Rayne seems to be teenish in emotions and very adult in that she survived earth, although, without intervention she and brother would have perished. I liked the mystery of Shrike and of Rayne's "guide". All in all, a good read.

This author tends to like to write about personality disorders and mental dysfunctions. In her series the Queens Blade, Blade is oppressed. In this series it's almost nearly the same story with different settings, different characters, but a lot of the same outcomes. She tells a good story, but like many authors, she gets hung up on an ideal she just can't seem to let go of. If she only freed her imagination and let it branch out, there would be no end to the things she could accomplish in her writing. She's very imaginative, but is just too hung up in the idea of the male characters being a "good man underneath it all, but a person who is capable of doing very abominable deeds." And the female characters being a bit too damsel in distress and addle-brained. In Slave Empire, Queens Blade and Demon Lord, all the men have similar characteristics. Same with the female leads. I wouldn't advise anyone here to read the Demon Lord series. They're incomplete and the story isn't finished. It's disappointing to start a series only to discover it has no ending because the author hasn't bothered to finish the series yet. But for Queens Blade and Slave Empire, they're a good read. Just don't expect TOO much of an original story from her other novels, as I've said, she's locked herself into a set pattern she needs to break free from. She's getting predictable. I use to read a lot of Johanna Lindsey, but she's got the same issue. After years and years of reading her books, she's predictable. No surprises is a boring read sometimes. Why I started reading TC Southwell. In the hunt for something new.

Propecy, the first book in the Slave Empire series, has some negatives and positives. First, the main character, Rayne, has to be one of my least favourite female characters in fiction; her character is flat and inconsistant. At the start of the book we find her barely eeking out an existance with her brother Rawn on an Earth completely ruined by pollution and green-house gases, circa 2034. She is surrounded by monsters, both figuratively and literally - many humans have mutated due to the thinning of the ozone layer, while others steal or kill to eat and survive amongst the ruins of cities, some are cannabalistic and there is a slavery of a sort practiced by the Autocrats (a group that the author does little to tell us about, particularly who exactly they are). Yet, by the time Rayne ends up living with the Atlanteans who rescue her, she finds Slavery abhorrent and becomes very naive. This is just not consistant since she has experienced what can only be termed a hellish life from the age of eight when her parents were killed in a riot, circa 2020. Then too, Rayne and her brother Rawn seem to be remarkably knowledgable about Earth history, etc even though there formal education would have ended on the death of their parents and as the world devolved into ruins - ergo no schools! Finally, Rayne has some psi powers, but what I find strange is the fact that at no point do we see an Atlantean help her learn how to use these abilities nor do we see her practicing these new skills - call me crazy, but if you had psi powers wouldn't you be busy practicing your new found abilities? Now the positives. While I found the book rather a slow burner, overall I liked the plot. Southwell has created an extroadinary universe peopled by an assortment of interesting alien life-forms. The only character that had some character development and was interesting was the Shrike a.k.a Tarke. He is a dangerous mystery man with a murky past - probably why Rayne is intrigued by him and wants to find whats behind the mask (he literally wears one over his face so no one knows what he looks like), and she harbours some nebulous romantic feelings for him - yep, she's definitely one of those girls who like bad boys and is totally looking for his good points, how stereotypical. The writing is good, sometimes uninspiring, and I will probably read the next book just to find out more about the intriguing Shrike and how it pans out for Golden Child, Rayne. Overall, I feel Southwell has missed some opportunities to do more world-building and tidy up some aspects of the novel that are inconsistant and make the novel not really fire. In other words, the novel is just so so.

The last 10% of this book was on a par with book 2, so I can only think that book 3, will be superb, I can hardly wait to find out if I am correct.

Enjoyed the start of the story based on Earth before it moved onto Atlan and the various other planets of the universe. The descriptions of life on the various planets was interesting and captured my imagination and the love interest between Rayne and Thrace added another dimension. No more reviewing at this point as I'm away to start the next book The Crystal Ship....can't wait!
